iTunes UK offers more free vintage television shows

diffstrokesvid
Could Apple be offering FREE regular videos on iTunes like they do with their "Single of the Week"? as just over one week after they offered the pilot episodes of Charlie's Angles and Starsky and Hutch, comes a FREE episode of the 70's/80's hit comedy show "Diff'rent Strokes"

OpenProj for Mac OS X

Whilst looking for some free software I stumbled across OpenProj, which as the name suggests is a free Project application, that is compatible with Microsoft Project files. I am not a heavy project user, so spending money on suitable software is hard to justify, but OpenProj could be just the thing for occasional projects, and viewing MS Project files. I have not had much chance to test the software, but I did open a test Microsoft Project 2002 file (see below) with no problems, and the website does list as Microsoft Project compatible.

OpenProj is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux, so if you are looking for a multi-platform MS Project compatible application then OpenProj may just do the trick.

For more information, or to download the software go to the OpenProj website.

Qik Announces iPhone Support

qik
Hot on the heels of Flixwagon's announcement that they were going to support live vidcasting from the iPhone, Qik, one of the leaders in vidcasting has announced they are preparing to support the iPhone. For anyone interested in this style of broadcasting, this will be a welcomed addition to the iPhone, and The Mac Café plans to test and hopefully use this neat application to do live vidcasts from around the UK.

280 Slides

Thanks to TUAW I have just been introduced to this neat FREE webapp called 280 Slides from 280 North. This is a Keynote/PowerPoint style application that runs purely with in a web browser, and is an ideal cloud computing application. Whilst it does have some similarities to Apple's Keynote application (being that 2 of the developers are ex Apple employees), it was not designed just for Apple users, but for any web browser on any platform.

O2 iPhone WiFi to include BT OpenZone

btopenzone
According to MacWorld O2 has quietly improved its WiFi hotspot deal with addition of BT OpenZone. Currently UK WiFi coverage is covered by The Cloud, but with the addition of BT OpenZone, O2's iPhone customers should have access to high speed internet access in most towns and cities. This extra coverage will benefit those who choose not to upgrade their 1st Gen iPhone's to the new 3G one.

6-9-08-tomtom-iphone2
According to Engaget, TomTom have their SatNav software ready to release for the iPhone. If this is correct, then the iPhone really will dominate the SmartPhone market, as its simplicity and versatility will make out shine all other devices of this type.

O2 UK 3G iPhone Pricing Announced

o2-iphone
O2 now have pricing on their website for the new 3G iPhone, and the prices are better than expected for the UK. It is FREE on some tariffs, with the 8GB version costing no more that £99, and the 16GB version costing no more than £159. These are bargain prices, and if you are an existing iPhone owner you can upgrade to the new 3G iPhone for FREE on some tariffs, or an upgrade fee on others. The bad news is that it looks like anyone with O2, but who is not an iPhone owner will have to wait until their existing plan is up for renewal, which is a shame as with the previous model any O2 customer could upgrade their existing tariff before the end of the talk plan you were on.

Update: The iPhone will be available in the UK on pay-as-you-go. There are no prices listed on O2's website yet, but we will post as soon as there is some news on pricing.

Apple 3G iPhone Announced

3g-iPhone-black 3g-iPhone-white
Apple today finally announce the new 3G iPhone at WWDC 2008, which will go on sale the 11th July in the UK. The new iPhone will be available in the UK in 8GB and 16GB versions, and either Black or White. Apple announced that the starting price worldwide will be $199 USD, but as we know the UK tends to pay more for its technology, but that said with current exchange rates and UK VAT, and with Apple's commitment to price, then we should see the 8GB version for about £150.00 GBP.

Over the next 24/48hrs I will be looking at the 3G iPhone speck and weighing up the pro's and con's (if there are any) and posting my comments on whether it is worth upgrading from the 1st Gen iPhone, or waiting for the 3rd Gen iPhone.

MobileMe

mobileme_box
MobileMe, the Internet service from Apple, automatically pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events to your Mac or PC and over the air to your iPhone and iPod touch. So no matter where you are, your devices are always up to date. You also get easy photo sharing, 20GB of online storage, and more.

This new replacement service for .mac will be available in the UK from July priced at £59.00 for a single user, and £89.00 for a family license, which for what you get in my opinion is good value.

You can pre-order MobileMe today from here.

SlimKey

Following on from Will's earlier review of Apple's Wireless Slim Keyboard, I decided it was time to upgrade my external keyboard to one of these new and sleeker keyboards. Whilst I liked the Wireless Keyboard, I wanted a full size keyboard, and not the smaller styled one, so I went out and bought the full sized USB version. Like the Wireless version, this keyboard is stunning, and like Will said, why aren't all keyboards this sleek. The only gripe I have with this keyboard, is the 2 USB ports located on either side of the rear of the keyboard are set to far in to allow a USB pen drive to be plugged in without the use of an extension cable Sad, but apart from this it is worth every penny. As to which keyboard to opt for is purely down to personal preference.

In addition to the slim keyboard I decided to add the Macessity SlimKey Stand to my setup.
IMG_0184
The SlimKey Stand is the younger brother of the LowKey Stand, with the only difference being the SlimKey does not have its older brothers powered USB hub. Due to the lack of CE certification, the LowKey is not available in the UK and rest of Europe, and for this reason I had no choice but to opt for the SlimKey. That said, the SlimKey does not disappoint, as it allows me to slide my new slim keyboard under my 23" Cinema display, keeping my desk area clean and tidy. Being able to regain desk space has proved invaluable, as i can now sit my Canon EOS D400 on the desk whilst transferring images, and if/when necessary use pen and paper to make handwritten notes, without needing to move things around.
IMG_0189 IMG_0186
The SlimKey like the LowKey is a simple design, made of a single piece of steel with a small leg which is located in the center of the stand. This leg is designed to provide the extra support needed to ensure that the stand does not buckle under the weight of the largest TFT screens. The stand itself is also fairly heavy, and it is this weight that has made the UK price higher than expected. There is some good news however, the developer Macessity has decided to switch to using Aluminum for its new stands, and so with reduced weight should come reduced shipping costs, and thus reduced consumer price.

All-in-all the SlimKey makes the perfect companion to any of Apple's slim keyboards, and despite its costs, it is ideal for anyone looking to tidy their desk/working space, but the USB'd LowKey would have been even better.

iTunes UK now selling & renting movies

films
At long last Apple has made films from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Sony Pictures Television International and Lionsgate UK available to buy or rent via the iTunes UK store. The iTunes movies are available at £6.99 for library title purchases and £10.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are £2.49 for library title rentals and £3.49 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at just one pound more.

If like me you have bought a HD TV, but have yet to upgrade to a HD DVD player, then as the available films and TV programs increase, then the Apple TV may be a viable option, and one I am now seriously considering.

Apple's Wireless Slim Keyboard

INITIAL THOUGHTS

kbtop
OK OK lets not get into a mass debate about Apple and its bleeding cutting edge design as there’s bound to be a company out there with more bleeding slash cutting edge designed products available (not sure of all this slashing and cutting analogy - kids may be reading this before the watershed – Ed) but the Apple Bluetooth keyboard is sharp.

I decided a while back to use my MacBook with a larger screen, so needed another keyboard and a wireless one was the preferred option. Let those radiowaves carry all those lovely ones and noughts through the ether rather than cluttering up my desk flying up and down some old copper based wiring spaghetti.

I have to be a little honest here and say the keyboard was ordered without really knowing the product but that it was a wireless keyboard from Apple – that be trust that be.

The box duly arrived and my initials thoughts before opening it were wondering if the box only contained the paperwork and surely no keyboard could fit inside this small enclosure. Apple keeping tree felling to a minimum. Saving the planet for our children. Respect for the planet. (Do get on with it –Ed) Sorry about that, I have a thing about packaging.

On removing the keyboard I was open mouthed, I had in my hand a real touchy feely thing, a surrealist dream, a Miro moment, a keyboard for the fingers but would it play to my tune. Yes it would.

How come keyboards of the past are so large, yes all keyboards should now plough this keyboards furrow and lose weight. Just running fingers across all surfaces and this keyboard becomes sculpture

CONTROLS AND OTHER BITS
  • Keyboard On and Bluetoothed - Press aluminium button at the end of tube until led comes on and disappears when bluetoothed
  • Keyboard Off and UnBluetoothed - Press aluminium button at the end of tube for a couple of seconds until led comes on and then goes off.
  • Runs with the insertion of three AA batteries
  • Has keys with letters and numbers on

CONCLUSION

"Step across the line and touch the art." "Sharpen your pencil with this blade."

New iPhone could be for sale at £100 by July

Apple’s next-generation iPhone could be available in Britain for about £100 next month, that's according to a report on the Times Online. If true, then Apple and O2 could have a bumper year and Apple may reach their 10,000 iPhone sales target, but as this reported price is for a subsidised iPhone where does this leave current iPhone owners who want to upgrade? and will this cheap iPhone price tie customers (as I suspect) in to a 2 year contract? anyway hopefully we won't have to wait much longer to find out.

YourDay - A small freebie

yourday
Whilst looking at the Crimson Sky Software website for my last post I stumbled across this neat little freebie from the developer of BitClamp, Daniel Greg. On Daniel's personal blog is this neat little application called YourDay, which has been designed to provide a quick and simple display of all your iCal entries for that day. The application is basic, but simple things very often prove to be the best. Daniel is currently working on an updated version of this app, but if you are running Leopard and want a simple way to show your daily iCal entries, then hope over to Daniel's website and give the current version a try.

BitClamp - Mac Encryption Software

bitclampscreen
If you are looking for easy to use encryption software, then check out BitClamp. BitClamp was original developed by Crimson Sky Software, but has subsequently moved to Fastforward Software, and was designed to offer a simple drag and drop interface similar to AppZapper. It is this simple interface that makes this piece of software so appealing, as anything simple, quick and easy to use will be used. There is a 15 day trial version of BitClamp available to download, and if you like it, it will only set you back $20 USD.
