iPhone 2.0 upgrade woes

After 4hrs my iPhone finally activated and iTunes
began the restore, but all is still not well. As part
of the restore the iPhone restarts to be detected by
iTunes, but oh no, I get an error about the restore
being interrupted, so I select the option to restore
again. After the 3rd restore I decided to choose the
option to cancel, but now every time I sync my iPhone
I get the same error message. What's this all about?
If anyone has any ideas on a fix, then please post
your suggestions in the comments.
UPDATE: Fedup with this continued error, I decided to Delete Backup and hope for the best. The good news is that at the next sync iTunes created a new backup and the error has now gone away
